MC Lyte, is a pioneering figure in hip-hop, known for breaking barriers as one of the first prominent female MCs. Her third album, “Act Like You Know,” released in 1991, is what solidified her status as a formidable force in hip-hop. She has paved the way for the next generation by being the first female solo rapper to be nominated for a Grammy. In addition to firsts, she is the first solo woman rapper to achieve a gold single, first solo female rapper to be commemorated in VH-1’s HIP HOP HONORS and Carnegie Hall’s first rap artist to ever preform! She has currently been active in charity work, particularly focusing on education, youth empowerment, philanthropy and entrepreneurship.
